Rishikesh is a city in India’s northern state of Uttarakhand, in the Himalayan foothills beside the Ganges River. The river is considered holy, and the city is renowned as a center for studying yoga and meditation. Temples and ashrams (centers for spiritual studies). Rishikesh has special place in Hindu culture since ancient times, and the place is associated with many Hindu legends. Due to its religious value, daily life at Rishikesh is full of pious activities, as per law the city only serves vegetarian food. Alcohol is prohibited in the city.

Rishikesh is also the ‘Yoga Capital of the world’ and a renowned center for Ayurvedic studies. Chhota-Char-Dham Yatra, the sacred journey to 4 holy shrines of Himalayan region, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Literacy rate (2011) of Rishikesh city is 88.83 % higher than state average of 78.82 %. In Rishikesh, Male literacy is around 94.26 % while female literacy rate is 82.94 %, which was higher than the national average of 82.14% and 65.46% respectively according to Census 2011.

Close to Rishikesh is the National park of Rajaji that encompasses the Shivaliks, near the foothills of the Himalayas. The national park is a tiger reserve and it is most renowned for its elephants. The park is spread over 820 km2 and three districts of Uttarakhand state.
